1. Classification - Stalin felt that Ukraine's nationalism through religion and culture overpowered their loyalty to the USSR. He said the problem was "bourgeois nationalism"
2. Symbolization - Independent farmers that resisted collectivization were called "kulaks"
3. Dehumanization - Vladimir Lenin called kulaks "bloodsuckers, vampires, plunderers of the people and profiteers..."
