The Five W's - A Closer Look at Holodomor
Who?
- Rural Ukrainians
- The Soviet Union
- Joseph Stalin
- Socialists
What?
- An attempt to stomp out the Ukrainian population through methods of starvation and later, deliberate shootings.
When?
- 1932 - 1933
Where?
- Ukraine
- Note that Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union at this time.
Why?
- During the 1930's, Ukraine was beginning to seek political independence and sovereignty from the Soviet Union. Great thinkers and radical people were coming about in Ukraine.
- This change in the Ukrainian demographic posed a threat to the communist Soviet Union as they opposed social principles such as individuality and privatization.
- Because of the fertility of the Ukraine's land, agriculture was spectacular. The great farmland here got the Ukraine the nickname "the bread-basket of Europe". This is important because Ukraine became a crucial staple in the Soviet's food supply.
- It is clear why the Soviet Union would fear the Ukraine gaining independence, considering the fact that Ukraine was so resourceful to the Soviet Union.
How?
- Stalin imposed laws on Ukrainian peasants that stipulated all foods to be the property of the Soviet Union. They essentially enforced collectivism on the people.
- To continue, Stalin has installed scouting/watch towers to moderate and guard the Ukrainians as they would be very tempted to hold food from the Union, as they are an integral food producer right now.
- Borders have been cut off and huge harvest quotas are stated, forcing a mass food shortage throughout the country.
- Finally, in order to catalyze the deaths of independence-seeking Ukrainians, many are being shot to death to stomp out any political aspirations.
